Quick Overview
The Whirlpool WPW10165425 Refrigerator Bi-Metal Defrost Thermostat is a temperature sensitive control component that regulates the operation of the defrost heater based on the evaporator's temperature. It responds to changing temperatures by opening or closing its internal electrical contacts, and allowing the defrost cycle to stop when sufficient frost has been removed. The thermostat attached directly to the evaporator tubing inside the freezer compartment where it continuously monitors coil temperature. Its temperature controlled switching assists the defrost process, while supporting efficient cooling performance between the defrost cycles.

Customer Questions
What does the Whirlpool WPW10165425 bi-metal defrost thermostat do?

The bi-metal defrost thermostat monitors the evaporator's temperature and switches its internal electrical contacts in response to temperature changes. This regulates the defrost heater and allows the cycle to stop after sufficient frost has been removed.

Which refrigerator models are compatible with the WPW10165425 bi-metal defrost thermostat?

The listed compatible models are ABB1921WEW0, ABL1922FES3, ABB2522FEB3, and ABB2221WEW0. Compare your refrigerator model number with these models before ordering.

How can I maintain the Whirlpool bi-metal defrost thermostat?

Keep the area around the thermostat and evaporator tubing free from excessive frost and debris. Avoid pulling, bending, or physically disturbing the thermostat or its wiring when cleaning the freezer compartment.

What symptoms can occur when the thermostat fails?

A faulty thermostat may not switch its electrical contacts correctly as the evaporator temperature changes. This can interfere with defrost heater control and may contribute to excessive frost accumulation.

Why does the thermostat need to sense evaporator temperature?

Temperature sensing allows the defrost heater circuit to respond to the evaporator's actual temperature. The thermostat can change the electrical contact state as the coil warms during the defrost cycle.

What should I check before replacing the Whirlpool defrost thermostat?

Disconnect electrical power before accessing the freezer's defrost components. Inspect the thermostat's attachment to the evaporator tubing and check the wiring for visible damage before removing the existing part.

Is the Whirlpool WPW10165425 an OEM replacement bi-metal defrost thermostat?
